Way Back PAC directly financed three PACs in the Hometown network

Federal and Idaho records identify Way Back PAC as a common upstream funder of three Hometown-network committees: $350,000 to Defend and Protect Idaho, $100,000 to Hometown Heroes PAC, and $100,000 to Idaho First during the April 1–June 3, 2026 federal reporting period. Thus Way Back did not merely fund Hometown before Hometown redistributed money; it separately capitalized Hometown and two of Hometown’s recipient PACs. Idaho Education News reported that Way Back’s largest disclosed sources included $1.125 million from Western Futures Fund and $350,000 from Toolbox, both nonprofits. Defend chair Gary Raney told the Idaho Capital Sun that Way Back reached out to Defend, was interested in Defend’s perspective on Idaho politics, and that their missions aligned. That statement establishes direct contact and exchange of Idaho political perspective between the upstream funder and one spender, but does not establish discussion of particular ads, candidates, expenditures, or coordination among the recipient PACs. The FEC reports most Way Back receipts as 'other receipts' rather than ordinary contributions because of its hybrid/nonfederal structure; donor tracing requires examining the underlying Schedule H/other-receipt transactions, not only the FEC summary.
